Borderoots: Creatives, Innovators, Entrepreneurs Along The 3,145 km Divide

September 10, 2021
Stephanie Bermudez

Expected to launch in the Summer of 2021, is our newest program that centers borderlands culture and bilingual knowledge as the greatest tangible and intangible asset in community development and entrepreneurship.

Borderoots aims to highlight the creative, innovative, and influential entrepreneurs along the 3,145 km long border line so that we can redefine startup culture there.

We do this by educating, inspiring, mobilizing, and connecting. Everything we do is rooted in passion and impact for the binational, bilingual culture of the USA and MEX borderlands region.

Who We Serve

We serve the underserved. We give them a platform to find and express their voices, have experiences, share knowledge, and ultimately, the insights to be innovative in their communities.

Innovation with Roots

From our branding to the format of our programs, to where and how we grow our community, this movement is driven to highlight the innovation coming from the people who are rooted in the borderlands.

Many of us are American grown with deep Mexican roots. We are proud to be American and proud to be Mexican. We honor that an invisible line may separate our land, but it does not separate us from ourselves and from each other.

Why We Do It

The need for real, lasting change along the border continues to grow.

Engaging community in discourse to develop a deeper understanding of strengths and barriers to sustainable environmental practices in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, while addressing perceived barriers for borderlands of all ages to engage in startup culture.

We are enthusiastically committed to empower emerging borderland entrepreneurs to self identify, gain industry knowledge, connect to culture and community, solve local problems, innovate and prosper like never before.

We’ll do this by mobilizing borderlanders and by recruiting and uniting champions, leaders, stakeholders, and change agents in communities that want to  be part of the bigger picture.

The challenges that the Southern Arizona USA /Northern Sonora MEX region is experiencing are the ones we face too.

Despite encountering many challenges, we have not let these become barriers. Our determination and perseverance to long term change has allowed us to instead see them as opportunities.

Borderoots builds bridges to overcome barriers to participation.

Through strong partnerships, empowering local champions, and committing to a culture of rapid assessment, we’ll continue to increase our understanding of the distinctive local barriers associated with entrepreneurship and workforce accessibility across diverse ages and abilities in the region.

When we honor our roots.
When we tell our unique story.
Then we can learn from our trials.
And celebrate our triumphs.

We exist to connect.
We commit to sharing knowledge.
We value growth & opportunities.
We support our community.

Startup Unidos sees challenges at the border as opportunities. SU spans across boundaries with a unique binational and bilingual approach that unites diverse networks from industry, government, academia, and grassroots movements to bring culturally-anchored entrepreneurship support and innovative workforce development to overlooked border communities.
